Your input is needed: Attendance Tracking and Contact Sharing

Dear Community,

As part of a project funded through an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant, we are in the design phase for two important features: Attendance Tracking and Privacy-First Sharing of Contact Details.

Attendance Tracking

We are exploring ways to allow participants to signal their attendance at talks, either through e.g. a button on the web interface, or by scanning a QR code displayed on the projector screen at the venue. The main goal would be to get statistics on the number of people present at events, which would help both participants and organizers understand how popular certain talks are, as well as help participants keep a record of the talks they watched.

There is some existing work which could potentially be leveraged, such as a PR which allows for multiple check-ins at a single event. Alternatively, there could be a check-in flag associated to each talk/participant.

Privacy-First Sharing of Contact Details

As business cards go out of fashion, I often find myself having to exchange e-mail, LinkedIn or other social media profiles with people I meet at conferences. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could allow participants to share their contact details with others in a privacy-conscious way, using their phones (e.g., via QR codes), and optionally retain that information in a single place? We want to ensure this process is secure, user-friendly, and respects everyone’s privacy preferences. Some ideas along this lines involve an Indico Progressive Web App (PWA) which could later be extended as the new mobile-friendly Indico UI progresses.

How You Can Help

We believe the most useful solutions come from community-wide collaboration, and we’d love to hear your thoughts! Here’s how you can contribute:

  1. Share Your Ideas: What would make attendance tracking or contact sharing more useful for you?
  2. Highlight Challenges: Are there specific pain points or concerns you’d like us to address?
  3. Suggest Improvements: Do you have suggestions for how these features could be more intuitive or effective?

Please reply to this thread with your feedback, ideas, or questions. Your input will directly shape the development of these features, ensuring they meet the needs of our community.

Thank you for your time and collaboration!
