OperationalError: (psycopg2.OperationalError) FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "[local]", user "user", database "indico", SSL off

All was good inside my dev Ubuntu Desktop env, but after I started fiddling around with PostgreSQL (likely after trying to add entries in the pg_hba.conf file, so that I can access PostgreSQL from outside the VM box), I started getting the following error when trying to browse to localhost:8000 (Indico) :frowning:

sqlalchemy.exc.OperationalError

While this is outside the scope of indico, we can still help you if you shared your actual configs :wink:

# This file consists of lines of the form:

# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed
# values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation.
#
# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
# you need to reload the server.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, run "pg_ctl reload", or execute
# "SELECT pg_reload_conf()". Some parameters, which are marked below,
# require a server shutdown and restart to take effect.
#
# Any parameter can also be given as a command-line option to the server, e.g.,
# "postgres -c log_connections=on". Some parameters can be changed at run time
# with the "SET" SQL command.

I modified the

listen_addresses = 'localhost'

to

listen_addresses = '*'

inside postgresql.conf, and added the:

local all indico trust line inside pg_hba.conf

Then restarted PostgreSQL via sudo service postgresql restart

pg_hba.conf usually has many comments explaining to the file works…

What you put there means that any local user with access to the Postgres UNIX socket has access to the indico user. This is something you usually don’t want (the default is that a system user has access to a postgres user with the same name).

Anyway, for remote access you need a host or hostssl entry:

host  all  indico  0.0.0.0/0  md5

This now allows any IP to access any database the the indico user can access. Note that you need to set a password for the user (local unix socket connections will still work without one); easiest option is to run psql as the indico user and type \password there. That should prompt you to set one.

I am having a similar issue.
On my server I only have the PostgreSQL client, so there are no conf files.
In my remote database the “indico” role is set to use password (md5), not Kerberos, and SSL is off.
When I try to do a db upgrade, I get the follwoing:

Connected!

How is indico trying to connect? What has changed in the latest released version and this is a problem? My development machines, one running indico v2.0 and the other indico v2.3 (downloaded from master in November) are working fine with the same setup for PostgreSQL.

I would appreciate your help!
Thank you in advance
Penelope

We just pass the SQLALCHEMY_DATABASE_URI to SQLAlchemy (and thus to psycopg2). Nothing overly fancy. So this should work:

SQLALCHEMY_DATABASE_URI = 'postgresql://indico:******@cdpgsdev.fnal.gov:5435/indico_int'

Then why I get the error on GSSAPI when I run indico db update and not on my test program?
Does SQLALCHEMY do something more?

Not that I know of. Do you have some environment variables set which could make the postgres client library try to use gssapi?

There are no environment variables set for PostgreSQL. These are all the variables under user indico and they the same for root:

ok strange… i asked in the postgres channel on IRC with a link to this thread, maybe someone there got an idea…

PS: Please post code/error snippets, shell command output, etc. formatted as code and not quotes. It’s hard to read and I always have to paste it in my editor to fix it manually…

```
put code-like stuff
in a triple-backtick fence
```

Thank you!
I will not use blockquotes either

I tried the following, assuming that this is how you call the SQLAlchemy, and it works fine no errors:

#!/usr/bin/python
import psycopg2
import sys
from sqlalchemy import create_engine

def main():
        # sqlalchmey URI
        sqlURI = 'postgresql+psycopg2://indico:****@cdpgsdev.fnal.gov:5435/indico_int'

        engine = create_engine(sqlURI)
        engine.execute('commit')

        print engine
        print "Connected using sqlalchemy+psycopg2!\n"

        #Define our connection string
        conn_string = "host='cdpgsdev.fnal.gov' port='5435' dbname='indico_int' user='indico' password='****"

        # print the connection string we will use to connect
        print "Connecting to database\n ->%s" % (conn_string)

        # get a connection, if a connect cannot be made an exception will be raised here
        conn = psycopg2.connect(conn_string)

        # conn.cursor will return a cursor object, you can use this cursor to perform queries
        cursor = conn.cursor()
        print "Connected using only psycopg2!\n"

if __name__ == "__main__":
        main()

I added a couple of print statements in the psycopg2/__init__.py and this is what values are passed to

-- **kwargs
user = user
host = cdpgsdev.fnal.gov
password = pass@host/indicopostgresql://indico:xxxx
port = 5435
database = indico_int

The connection string passed is not correct.
At this point, I do not know where to go to fix this

The value it gets for password looks really weird…

Also, the user is not correct either. Only the host, port and database are correct

And that exact same connection string that works when calling create_engine directly does not work in indico.conf?

Can you check if sending some query works from within indico shell? Simply running User.query.first() would be a good option to test.

If yes, it sounds like there is something being overwritten when indico is being run from inside uwsgi… But no idea what could be doing that!

@ThiefMaster THANK YOU!
The problem was that for some reason the URI was wrong on the indico.conf file.
As soon as I fixed it everything is working as expected.
MY BAD
